Would agree to Astraist on most, except may be for pulling over on a highway, as usual. It is often much less risk IMO to pull over than to continue to drive with such a distraction as screaming child.
Also, not looking in the mirror does not sound as a practical advice to me. I usually drive with my central mirror tilted down when I have kids in the car. So I can see both their heads and a road behind
And yes, to OP, mothers (and fathers!) are the most distracted drivers around.
When I am transporting my Grandson I tilt the mirror down so I can communicate with him face to face. I can still see traffic in the mirror. It is degraded but is still visable if I concentrate.
How about getting another mirror, vaccum adhesive, place it on the top-right corner of the front windshield or near the interior mirror, and use IT to see the child in the rear?
Sure beats tilting down the interior mirror and reducing your view at the road behind. Some vans nowadays have another small mirror surface over the original one for this very purpose.

Yeah, we got such a van recently. However, this extra mirror is small and shows faces very small, too - so I often end up tilting the main mirror again.
