OK this is something I have never been able to master, and I have been driving for 20 years give or take now. Anyone else have the same problem?

Me too, I could never figure it out and just don't even bother with it. Most of the time I don't anyway.

The only time that I have ever parallel parked was for my initial driver's test. That is also the only time I have ever practiced it.
I think that overall, parallel parking is quite impractical, especially if you are trying to do so on a busy street! You just back up traffic more, and it isn't even worth it.

A lot of people are intimidated by parallel parking. Two steps can help to resolve this: The first is to understand the geometry so you know exactly what is going on and how to do it properly.

The other part is simply to practice it in a controled environment and with other people for help and support. Gradually advance into more complex and tight spaces, as described in this thread.

Unless one parallel parks regularly, one gets out of practice and loses the ability to do it well. At one time, I was very good at it but now I rarely have any reason to.
