I'm new at driving and seem to have run into a problem. My car has automatic transmission but I find that while accelerating my rpms goes up high and stays high. So to reach and mantain 40 mph I have to let the rpms go up past 3 and almost to 4 and endure the associated increase in revving noise.

I know this isn't a problem with the car since other members of my family drive the car just fine.

Any thoughts?

Hi Tal, and welcome to Fun and Safe Driving!

High rpms while accelerating is pretty much normal, depending on intensity of your acceleration. How high they are on a particular speed depends on your particular car. 3K rpms for 40mph, while probably on a high side, does not look outside the normal range, on a first glance. I will take a look what mine are today and let you know. Smile

OK, so I took a look while driving. At around 40 mph level road my Murano keeps engine speed a bit below 2000 rpms, and its redline is about 6500. So, unless your redline is much closer to 10K, 3K rpm looks a bit high, let alone 4K. Where do you keep your tranny control lever? Is it on "D" when you drive?

It is better of you get training and learn courses of driving as you are newbie. The fluctuations of rpms for your car while accelerating depends upon your operation of gear.
