This is not all true if you are not in full control of the vehicle. Using the engine to help decelerate the car can be as important as the brakes. |

Yes, it is true. When running in a low gear off throttle, the computerized engine management unit (ECU) will discern that engine braking is taking place and will close the throttle. In neutral, the same ECU would have to inject fuel to keep the engine from stalling. Putting the car in neutral also hurts the transmission, especially an automatic transmission, and will impair the car's handling and the ability to accelerate forward when necessary.
When you drive, the car should be in gear. When you slow down, use the brakes. In a manual transmission car, stay in gear while braking, untill the RPM drops significantly, at which point you press the clutch untill you can re-angage it into first gear. Don't flick it into neutral and don't go down through the different gears. An automatic should be kept in D. |

By going down the road in neutral you lose possibly your Best defense to protect yourself: which is changing direction and Accelerating away from danger.
Cruise control saves fuel. However cruise control is a dangerous innovation. Why is it so dangerous? Because you are letting the car randomly and continuously put you and keep you in situations that should be avoided: like being boxed in by traffic, for example.
Even if you are not in traffic it is too easy to lose concentration or let your feet get into a position where you can’t use the brakes quickly if an emergency situation arises.
I never use cruise and I instruct my family to never use it.
